SELF CARE: ESTABLISHING A SYSTEM OF WHOLISTIC SUPPORT"

AROMATHERAPY

The centuries old ancient art of utilizing essential oils.

Nerves that respond to smell are wired into the brain & the stimuli are sent to the limbic center. These nerve pathways are interwoven throughout the limbic system sending a continuous flow of electrochemical impulses that direct human drives & emotions. The scent has an effect on the hypothalamus part of the brain. This part influences the hormonal system, affecting moods & feelings of depression, metabolism, stress levels & libido.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is any situation or event that causes a person to become upset whether it is consciously or unconsciously.  When people encounter a situation that is perceived as dangerous, threatening, or overwhelming, changes happen in the body.  Being stressed effects the nerve cells in our brains.  The brain sends out impulses through the autonomic nervous system.  The autonomic nerves go to every part of the body.  The autonomic nervous system has two distinctive parts:  The sympathetic and the parasympathetic.  The arousal of these systems affects the body's adrenal glands, which produce hormones that sustains the response of the system.  It also affects blood flow to all parts of the body, which includes the uterus, if mother is pregnant where the baby is developing.

STRESS ON THE UNBORN CHILD:

When our mothers are stressed the reproductive organs receive less blood and slows their muscular contractions.  Her uterus constricts, causing blood to the uterus to drop more and more.  Studies on pregnant animals have proven that when mother is under anxiety, her blood flow to the uterus can drop as much as 60% or more.  This maternal anxiety causes the baby's heartbeat to drop radically, which results in lower oxygen to the baby's blood.

If anxiety is experienced in the mother over a long period of time, this affects the baby negatively.  Lower amounts of oxygen and lower amounts of nutrients are going to the developing baby. The baby depends on the blood flow for food, oxygen, and the process of removal of waste products.  Whenever the mother is under stress, the baby is also under stress.  A stressed baby cannot digest the food properly. The food is broken down faster under stress and it is less efficient in helping calories to be converted to weight gain.  So this interferes with proper growth and development of the baby.  It also interferes with the baby's ability to fight infections.

Stress during the baby's life in the uterus, may lead to increased irritability, restlessness, crying, and digestive problems, after the baby is born.  Continued levels of stress hormones on the baby may affect the development of the brain and central nervous system.  Maternal stress may have lifelong effects on a baby's health and character continued into our adulthood.

SELF ANALYSIS:

Without a physical outlet to free the build up of these hormones and adrenalins these things wear down the immunological systems and leaves one vulnerable to illness and diseases, which could possibly lead to death. Restricting emotional expression and encouraging occupation with success, power and competition is associated with negative physical and psychological consequences i.e.: depression, anxiety, and relationship issues.

Men with stressful jobs who do not have the opportunity to make their own decisions have higher than usual blood pressure readings.  Their stressful work permanently damages the circulatory system.

Women who work outside of their homes and are also faced with the strains of work inside of their homes dealing with family, without adequate support, can lead to an increase in blood pressure to rise to an unhealthy dangerous level.

The family economic status being far below what is needed often leads to conflicts and an atmosphere of tension within the home.

SUFFERING IN SILENCE:

A Lack of Treatment A report published by researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that

  • [_] poverty
  • [_] parenting
  • [_] racial
  • [_] gender discrimination

These above points put black women -- particularly low-income black women -- at greater risk for major depressive disorder (MDD) Diane R. Brown is a professor of health education of behavioral science at the Rutgers School of Public Health and co-author of, "In and Out of Our Right Minds: The Mental Health of African-American Women." Her research shows a correlation between socioeconomic status and poor physical and mental health. "There's a strong relationship between socioeconomic status and health such that people at the lower end, people in poverty tend to have poorer health and tend to have fewer resources ... for dealing with the stressors of life," Brown said. According to the National Poverty Center, poverty rates for blacks greatly exceed the national average. And poverty rates are highest for families headed by single women, particularly if they are black or Hispanic.

Studies show about 72 percent of black mothers are single compared to 29 percent for non-Hispanic whites, 53 percent for Hispanics, 66 percent for American Indian/Alaska native and 17 percent for Asian/Pacific Islander. Since black women are more likely to be:

  • [_] poor
  • [_] unmarried
  • [_] parenting a child alone

All of the above are stressors

SHAME AND EMBARRASSMENT

Because mental health is a taboo subject in the African-American community, black people, and specifically black women, are less likely than other groups to even acknowledge it as a serious problem because of the shame and embarrassment that it can cause. Depression can effect anyone but cultural and gender differences cause depression to be experienced and expressed differently in African-American woman compared to other subgroups of the population. Researchers at the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) find that "African-American women tend to reference emotions related to depression as

  • [_] 'evil' or
  • [_] 'acting out.'"

They cite research providing evidence of communities holding on to long legacies of

  • [_] secrets
  • [_] lies
  • [_] shame originating from slavery.

Avoiding emotions was a survival technique, which has now become a cultural habit for African-Americans As a result black women are more likely to deal with the shame many feel about poor mental health and depression in much of the same way by avoiding the emotional toll it takes on them.

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE

Because of negative stigmas surrounding mental health and depression, there is an extreme lack of knowledge about depression in African-American communities. Researchers at Mental Health America find that African-Americans are more likely to believe depression is "normal." In fact, in a study commissioned by Mental Health America on depression, 56 percent of blacks believed that depression was a normal part of aging. Not only do a troubling number of African-Americans not understand depression to be a serious medical condition, but the stereotype of the strong black woman leads many African-American women to believe that they don't have the luxury or time to experience depression. Some even believe it is only something White people experience. "When seeking help means showing unacceptable weakness, actual black women, unlike their mythical counterpart, face:

  • [_] depression
  • [_] anxiety
  • [_] loneliness

writes author Melissa Harris-Perry in her book "Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America."

"Through the ideal of the strong black woman, African-American women are subject not only to historically rooted racist and sexist characterizations of black women as a group but also a matrix of unrealistic interracial expectations that construct black women as:

  • [_] unshakeable
  • [_] unassailable and
  • [_] naturally strong.

African-Americans tend to cope with mental health problems by using informal resources like the:

  • [_] church,
  • [_] family,
  • [_] friends,
  • [_] neighbors and
  • [_] coworkers.

In many cases they seek treatment from ministers and physicians as opposed to mental health professionals. This form of coping can be beneficial for black women who are uncomfortable with traditional forms of mental health care. But it can also encourage beliefs about negative stigmas surrounding mental health in the black church.

THE CULTURAL CHALLENGE

A history of trauma and victimization experienced by African-Americans has also helped foster a cultural mistrust toward the U.S. health care system. Events like the Tuskegee Experiments are hypothesized to contribute to many black people's negative attitudes about health care.

SWEPT UNDER THE CARPET:
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SIDE OF MATERNAL HEALTH

"In high-income countries, as many as 10 to 15 percent of women experience depression, anxiety, or other non-psychotic mental health challenges during pregnancy or the year after giving birth. In developing countries, the chances rise to 16 percent of pregnant women and 20 percent of postnatal women".

PCMDs can increase the risk of:

  • [_] preterm birth
  • [_] low birth weight,
  • [_] cause irregular behavior among new mothers,
  • [_] can lead to suicide.

SUICIDE

Suicide is a leading cause of maternal death in some developed countries, but PCMDs are actually more common in lower- and middle-income countries—especially in rural areas, where support services are often unavailable—and amongst low-income women, who cannot afford sufficient nutrition or treatment regardless of its availability. WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT Fisher’s research suggests a link between mental health and women’s empowerment. The status and treatment of women plays a formative role in their mental health, she said. The quality of a mother’s relationship with their intimate partner—including factors like whether the partner is:

  • [_] polygamous,
  • [_] violent,
  • [_] alcoholic, or
  • [_] rejects the pregnancy

—is key.

In a systematic review of health studies in low- and lower-middle income countries, Fisher and colleagues found PCMDs were more likely to occur if the:

  • [_] mother was an adolescent,
  • [_] pregnancy was unwanted,
  • [_] baby was a girl.
  • [_] baby is a boy

Conversely, women were much less likely to experience problems if they:

  • [_] received an education,
  • [_] were employed
  • [_] had child care,
  • [_] maintained a healthy relationship with an intimate partner.

BREAKING BARRIERS TO CARE A lack of funding has resulted from widespread misconceptions about the depth and severity of PCMDs. “To some extent, mental health professionals have taken kind of a silo attitude,” said Araya, “trying to keep it out of the main remit as if it were something completely different from other kinds of health problems when, in reality, there are many things which are common and many things which are different.”
