When purchasing foods from health food stores, always stop by the book section. There are many helpful books to support families learning how to incorporate wholistic health in the home. Its challenging when you're a parent who believes in using natural remedies like our grandparents/great grandparents did because many of our elders have made their transitions before we realized just how valuable their knowledge was.  Some of us have distant memories of watching them put a pot on a stove and stirring in ingredients of herbs and oils making some sort of concoction for us to drink, or rub on our skins. As a child we may have taken their abilities for granted.  But now as adults we can see just how much skills they had in keeping our families healthy through traditions passed on intergenerationally.  I was the child who asked my grandmother all sorts of questions.  She was the type of grandmother who loved to talk about everything, about her childhood, her own mother, and what it was like knowing her Native Indigenous grandparents and what they taught her. My grandmother was a valuable resource of whom I realize that more and more each day.  And as I journey into my eldership, I'm wondering how I will continue to pass on information of what I've learned to the next generation. 

GROWING UP IN THESE MODERN TIMES: 

Without the benefit of my grandmother's presence, I had to learn the importance of keeping up with my children's well-baby/child doctor appointments, while at the same time being confident enough to ask questions and do more research on my own. When my children were sick I didn't hesitate to get an appointment with the purpose of getting a medical diagnosis when I felt something was not in order. After the diagnosis I would talk with our doctor about addressing the illness as well as the side affects of the prescription drugs she would write out for the pharmacy to fill. I developed and cultivated a very mutually respectful relationship with my children's doctor so I was comfortable with asking her questions about possible side-effects and safe alternatives without raising "red flags". She would take her medical books off the shelveIs and we would look up the side effects together, then discuss them and the possible risk factors associated with the medicines. I would always thank her for her information, I took the prescription from her, smiled, and never argued.

FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS & VACCINATIONS:

After our doctor's visits, when I returned home I would go through the many books that I bought at the health food stores where I shopped, on herbs, essential oils, foods, etc... because I remembered growing up how my grandmother (The Elders Place At The Table)  told my mother she took us to the doctor too much. Whenever I had to return 2 weeks later with my children for a follow-up appointment, the doctor would always say how their symptoms had improved and how nice things were healing. Again I never argued. After being with this doctor for years and getting to know each other very well, I saw that she would begin to listen to me, eventually I'd tell her what I really used. She learned to trust my judgment and knew that if anything was out of my hands that I would trust hers. Don't judge, we all have to be retaught. Sometimes with time and patience your dotors can be your allies instead of enemies.  She trusted my judgement so much that she didn't question me when I decided to choose what my children would not be injected with, first on the list was the MMR solution.  Then later no vaccinations at all. Outside of the room while I was waiting for her to do a well baby check-up with my last child, I heard her tell the nurse "Oh you don't need those, this is L'dia's baby, she doesn't use vaccinations with her children"

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH:

Most of us learn about sexuality through our peers, who also learn from each other, the media: music videos, lyrics in songs, movies, and now pornographic material on our cellular devices. Most of the information is sensationalized and without healthful content If one is interested in expanding their knowledge about their own reproductive anatomy other than intercourse alone, there are some very good books on the market that teach about sexual energy from a wholistic point of view: Mental, Emotional, Spiritual, and Physical.  Engaging in intimacy with another person engages the whole mind, body, spirit. It should be an experience that leaves a person feeling healthy, whole, and recommitted to the relationship.  Few doctors discuss sexual activity with their patients.  But many of our health damages are often found rooted in how one is involved sexually with another.  This is a problem.  With proper knowledge intimacy and intercourse can be shared to increase one's health and longevity rather than deplete it. With proper knowledge, one is more comfortable with teaching the children in the home the healthy aspect of relationship building, bonding & sexual activity that goes on between a man and a woman, and how to maintain their reproductive health.

Our bodies are made up of the starts in the universe as well as the crystalline sands of the earth. Our ancient and traditional cultural ways of native indigenous healing involve more than just treating our physical bodies. Our spiritual awareness of our health is also necessary to create a balance wholisticially in our lives.  Having knowledge of the colors that may be out of balance in our Auric field supports us with determining which crystals and gemstones are beneficial for wearing and/or using during massage therapy sessions. As well as in harmony with the foodtherapy and tonal therapy.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: BENEFITS OF HEALTHY EATING

[_] Avocado: A healthy substitute for sour cream or cream cheese in dressings, dips, and spreads. High in Vitamin B6. B6 helps reduce the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Good for hypoglycemia and diabetes. Helps prevent kidney stones and face moles (seborrhea keratoses). Known as the “Superhero of the immune system”. The Immune System Cure.  Avocados are used to treat high blood pressure, kidney, heart and adrenal functions. Also helps to control blood sugar levels by helping insulin to work more efficiently. Helps to prevent birth defects in unborn children. Good source of Protein, Potassium, Chromium, Vitamin E. 

[_] Beans 6: Strengthens kidneys and adrenal glands, builds body mass. Eating a variety of beans, may be valuable in the prevention of diabetes and in the management of blood sugar levels. Eating beans may reduce the risk for developing certain types of cancers. Bean intake has been associated with a decreased risk of breast, stomach, colorectal, kidney and prostate cancers. [_] Bell Pepper: Red bell peppers are sweet.  Green bell peppers are more bitter.  Bell peppers boost the immune system and helps to maintain healthy skin and vision. Bell peppers are a source of carotene, Vitamins A, B2, B6, C E, folate, pantothenic acid, niacin, and the mineral potassium 

[_] Cardamon: Originated in India.  Helps check indigestion and gas  

[_] Cilantro: extremely cleansing to use in juices and smoothies. Digestive aid, diuretic, heavy metal detoxifier, beta carotene, vitamin C, folate, B1,B2, B3, B5, B6,vitamin E, vitamin K, copper, magnesium, potassium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, selenium.  

[_] Coriander:  Grew wild throughout Kemet and ancient Palestine.  Known as Chinese parsley or cilantro (see above). Good for indigestion, flatulence, mild stomach ache, anorexia and diarrhea.  Research indicates that it reduces blood sugar levels and may prove to be a useful sugar management too for diabetics.   

[_] Fennel:  High in fiber. In ancient Chinese medicine, fennel was used to help congestion and soothe a sore throat. Fenenl helps to increase the flow of breast milk.  Fennel helps with stomach aches, and can reduce acid  after meals by stimulating the secretion of digestive juices. Fennel is a natural remedy for babies who suffer from colic.  It also helps to lower blood pressure, reduces inflammation and maintain a healthy immune system. Fennel helps to maintain bone strength, and improves skin health protecting the skin's appearance by reducing wrinkles and naturally slowing the aging process. It's vitamin C and zinc contents helps to improve vision. High in Vitamins A, B6 C, Folate, K and a good source of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, selenium, and zinc.  Avoid if one has kidney disease or is taking beta-blockers prescribed by doctors to control high blood pressure. 

[_] Figs 1:  B6, C calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, protein Iron, zinc. In Egypt raw figs are eaten to relieve digestive problems caused by eating too much red meat, fish, eggs, or dairy products. Figs detoxifies stomach and heals swelling. Eating fresh ripe, and peeled figs prevents development of urotoxicty, helps expel urinary sediments and dissolves sandy sediments which can develop into kidney stones. According to Medicine of the Prophet. Figs increase stamina and productive. It helps one to: Cope with premenstrual tension, helps harmonize liver, increases energy, lubricates lungs, aids digestion by cleansing & soothing the intestines, helps in treatment of traumatic injuries. Water simmered with chopped figs helps to relieve sore throat and lungs. Figs have an important sulphur compound called ficin which helps in the treatment of chronic joint inflammation and selling of soft tissues common to rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic injuries such as acquired in sports activities: twisted ankles or pulled muscle ligaments. According to studies done by Japanese scientist reported in an issue of ”Agricultural & Biological Chemistry” figs were noted for reducing tumors. Good for large intestine. [_] Garlic 3,9:  When plagues ravaged Europe people ate garlic daily as a protection against diseases. Garlic rids the body of parasites. Treats nervous problems, headaches, spasms, cramps, mild seizures. Garlic is detoxifying to the blood and lymphatic systems. Treats upper respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, colds, & influenza, and asthma. Garlic reduces swelling and relieves pain. Good for high or low blood pressure. Garlic fights hypertension, prevents embolism or blood clots and lowers bad cholesterol. Garlic helps to slow down the aging process. Eases fears. Helping one to know death with less fear in order to understand life, it increases ones appreciation for life. It also is helpful for those who are in the transition, helping them to become more relaxed and acquainted with the dimension & transitioning. Garlic helps one to understand negative thought forms, to see their purpose and thus to change their vibration so the thoughts are transcended.

[_] Ginger 1,3: In ancient India it was known by the name shringara. Europeans obtained gingerroot in trade from the Arabs. Today the best ginger is said to come from Jamaica. In China warm ginger tea is made by boiling pieces of fresh ginger-root in water. This was used for colds, coughs, flu, fevers, & hangovers. Promotes sweating in feverish conditions. Chinese value for its power to strengthen the lungs & kidneys. In Tibet ginger is used to stimulate one’s vital energies during times of convalescing or from lethargy. Detoxifies the liver. Ginger is warming it stimulates digestion, boosts circulation, respiration, & nervous system functions. Destroys parasites, helps systematic cleansing through skin, bowels, & kidneys. Normalizes blood pressure. Eases motion sickness, & nausea from chemotherapy.  A ginger compress relieves kidney problems, menstrual cramps, gout, arthritis, headaches & spinal pain. A warm ginger footbath invigorates the whole body. 

[_] Grapes: 3,7: Treats menopausal heat symptoms, dry coughs. Treats urination & edema. Helps cleanse the blood and aids the elimination of mucous forming food residue. Grape juice is good for liver malfunctions, including jaundice & hepatitis. Good for lungs, strengthens internal organs. The high mineral content of boron in grapes helps to wards off osteoporosis. Polyphenols and tannins are ingredients in grapes that are antiviral and antitumor agents. Grape juice also kills bacteria and restricts tooth decay. Grapes are especially potent against the viruses that cause polio and herpes simplex. Red: Strengthens bones and tendons, harmonizes stomach, and promotes urination. relieves anger and irritability. A, B-complex, C, Potassium. Good for lungs, spleen, kidneys

[_] Jalapeno: Good for high blood pressure, pain from headache.  The heat in peppers clears nasal congestion and fights sinus infections.  Jalapenos clears bad bacteria in the stomach and intestines, good for ulcers. arthritis, and weight loss. Jalapeno causes the body to sweat excess fluid retention, a symptom of swollen ankles. Rich in antioxidants that fight off and heal from damaging cells. Vitamins A, C.  

[_] Nutmeg:  Increases food absorption in the small intestine. Caution:  too much nutmeg disorients the mind. 

[_] Olive 3: Extra virgin olive oil lowers bad cholesterol, cleanses and aids regrowth of the liver. Olive oil stimulates bile secretion and reduces the risk of gallstones. Olive oil reducesgastric acidity. It protects against ulcers and aids the passage of foods through the intestines helping to prevent constipation. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants. Slows down the deterioration that accompanies the aging process helping the cells to be healthier and live longer. Olive has a temporary tranquilizing effect. It helps enhance the ability to focus energy into a specific meditation. In ancient Kemet, olive oil was often used in ceremonies that brought minds together from a variety of beliefs and values. Olive merges energies creating a deep unconscious peace.  A slow moving person with blocked or stuck energy patterns or one who has a tendency for cysts and tumors, might use olives less frequently. Olives gives a greater sense of one’s purpose, allowing one to concentrate with greater energy to accomplish a task. Vitamin E is found in Olive oil and in human breast milk. Vitamin E aids normal bone growth and is suitable for pregnant and nursing mothers, it encourages the development of the infants nervous system before and after birth. Good for lungs, stomach. 

[_] Onions 7,9: A very popular food in Ancient Kemet and in Native Americans. Onions may be effective in controlling diabetes by blocking sudden increases in blood sugar. Chewing onions completely sterilizes the mouth and throat, shielding against disease-causing germs and viruses. In Arabia onions were valued for these properties: Expels toxic odor from the body, cut phlegm, increase sexual drive, give coction to the semen, and cleanse the stomach. Onions were treasured in ancient times as a food that had therapeutic value for improving kidney function. Onions alleviate the symptoms of hypertension, high blood sugar and elevated cholesterol. Onion will nullify the parasites and heavy metals from the system. An onion along with syrup made from honey is useful for treating coughs, colds, and asthma attacks. Onion opens the heart to release sadness allowing the sadness to be more easily understood. Onions reflect the necessity to peel away layers in order to know and understand one's self better.  It strengthens the attitude of lovingness regarding spirituality. With onion there is a much clearer ability to know the difference between what is another person’s point of view and what is your own. The ability to understand the different between sympathy and empathy, and a clearer emotional frame of mind in which it is easer to release feelings rapidly.  It allows you to see through another’s eyes for a moment, & see the world and the difficulties within it. [_] Romaine Lettuce 2,7: Helps increase breastmilk. Good for liver inflammation. Calms, relaxes nerves. Drying, diuretic, treats edema, candida, and damp conditions. Supports pancreatic function. Good for large intestine.

[_] Sage 4,6,7: Lowers fevers. Stops sweating, diarrhea, and bladder infections. Useful as a gargle for sore throats and ulcerations in the mouth. Relieves gas pains. Sage checks heavy menstrual bleeding.  Useful for reducing milk flow when weaning toddlers. Soothing to the nerves, and delirium in fevers. Sage decreases secretions, excess mucous of the sinuses, throat and lungs. Has beneficial effects on the blood and liver complaints as well as kidney troubles and internal hemorrhaging. Used for ceremonial smudging to clear negativity.  

[_] Spearmint 3: Helps disperse viruses or bacteria. Promotes circulation of energy, blood, and lymph. Helps in cases of mastitits, painful menstruation, and hives. Relieves spasms, increases perspiration, tones digestive system. Mint tea served after meals helps with digestion. Mints are anti-spasmodic. They help to soothe the muscles of the digestive tract and the uterus. If painful menstruation is due to cold blockages, mint is not recommended. Refreshing in cold drinks and teas. Commonly used for infants for feverish childhood illnesses, hiccups, indigestion, and flatulence.

[_] Tarragon: An appetite stimulant and digestive aid.  Eases insomnia, helps one in the dream state.  Supports cardiovascular health. Tarragon opens the door for the questions about life purpose to be answered.  It stimulates a deeper sense of one's true self and a greater acceptance to explore one's choices around life purpose much clearer.  With tarragon one is helped to remember why they have chosen to be on Earth, and who their deepest friends are.  

[_] Teff: An ancient grain grown in Ethiopia for thousands of years.  Teff is used to make njera, a gluten-free sourdough flat bread. High in fiber clearing the body of accumulated waste, food, & toxins.  Promotes digestive regularity and nutrient absorption.  Rich in Vitamins B6, and the minerals calcium, iron, manganese, protein & zinc.

[_] Tomato 9: Detoxifies blood. Tomatoes are very useful in some cases of gout, rheumatism, and anorexia. Has anticarcinogenic properties. Best avoided by people with arthritis or osteoporosis because they upset calcium balance. Long term use weakens gastrointestinal tract. Acids of green tomatoes are detrimental to kidneys. Avoid if ulcerous conditions. Good for stomach, liver.

[_] Turmeric: Flourishes in the rich, moist soils of Java, China, India, and Bangladesh. It improves metabolism and purifies the subtle nerve channels of the body. Turmeric is a chief component in curry powder and in prepared mustard. It gives curry powder and mustard its coloring. In India the powered rhizome is administered as an anthelmintic or agent that rids the body of parasitic worms. Turmeric also helps to relieve the stomach and intestinal gas caused by eating certain foods. It is used in ointments that speed the healing of smallpox and chicken pox lesions.
