DOMINANT THOUGHTS OR COMMENTS MADE DURING PREGNANCY

MAY HAVE LASTING EFFECTS ON THE PERSONALITY

A NORMAL PREGNANCY

"Mary would have had a 'normal' pregnancy.  There would have been no abuses heaped upon that tiny growing baby within her by a thoughtless mother who deprived the baby of its needed nourishments.  No smoking, no excessive use of stimulants or depressants, no careless accidents which could cause injury, no violent emotional upsets, or loud screaming, unhealthy family environment"

"HOW CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AFFECTS ADULTS FUTURE HEALTH" SOCIALIZING OUR YOUTH BUILDING HEALTH & EDUCATION Changing behaviors, 7 generations acknowledging that we are the past, present, & future. The Positive Parenting program is a hour once a week for 8 weeks program that teaces evidence based positive parenting techniques to a group. Within those 8 weeks, 3 individual consultations are arranged.

As a Childbirth Educator/Doula of course the prenatal classes are my favorite as well as the most challenging. Everyone doesnt take well to the understanding of how important mothers are to building a new world from the womb. And how important both parents are to that child, for different emotional reasons.

98% of the participants are single women parenting their children. Except for when I"m teaching the re-entry population, then the majority are single dads parenting their children. Participating parents are in groups at community sites for parents:

• Teen parents GED programs

• SSI programs

• Prenatal programs

• DFCS Back to work programs

• Re-Entry Accountability Court ordered programs As well as

• Daycares

• Private parenting groups

• Personal Parent/Child consultations

HOW CHILDHOOD TRAUMA AFECTS ADULTS FUTURE HEALTH The focus of my classes is to reduce the trauma associated with parenting styles so that children are not abused: mentally, emotionally, spiritually, or physically. Children are not concerned with how much or how little a caring parent contributes monetarily. Those are adult issues. A childs emotions are held hostage, when that determines whether or not a child can spend time with the other non-custodial parent. In many cases, not all, a child will grow to resent the parent who created the restriction for not having the other loving, caring, parent who desired to have a relationship with and interact with that child.

CAN BABY LEARN WHILE IN THE WOMB?

The research seems to point in that direction. In terms of mental health, this may be a clue to psychological issues adults exhibit. Hormones known as cytokines are produced and the mother’s immune system is affected, including her child’s. Chronic anxiety in the mother can set the stage for a whole array of trauma based results such as prematurity, complications of birth, death, and miscarriage. The opposite is also true.

When the mother is feeling healthy and happy, she produces oxytocin. This is often called the molecule of belonging. The presence of this component creates feelings of bonding and strengthens immunity in the baby. Neurotransmitters moving inside the mother’s body creates a chemical and physical imprint on the baby’s brain and body. The message imprinted is that there is safety and peace. The baby feels secure and taken care of.

There is a growing body of research showing that babies in the womb feel, taste, learn, and have some level of consciousness. One study had babies in the womb receiving “vibroacoustic stimulation” (Gonzalez-Gonzalez et al., 2006). That is a fancy way of saying sound waves were transmitted.

POSSIBLE COMMENTS/ACTIVITIES DURING PREGNANCY & BIRTH MAY HAVE LASTING EFFECTS ON PERSONALITY

  • [_] “Don’t waste too much time, I don’t think he/she is worth it” .....Overachiever
  • [_] “If during time of emergency baby is put aside, left alone, & family is upset with mother for taking a chance giving birth …..Wondering if he/she belongs, always trying to find one’s place, not sure where one fits in.
  • [_] “We really wanted a boy (or a girl) this time” .......Distrust of any demonstration of appreciation, trouble accepting complements.
  • [_] “We have too many children already, now here’s another one” .......Always feeling rejected
  • [_] “So you’re the little booger that caused mama all this trouble” ......Guilt, shame
  • [_] “I really don’t want you, you’re funny looking” .......Dislike for parent, difficult parent-child relationship, dislike for self
  • [_] “You’re so beautiful, you’re perfect in every way!” .......Feels secure, feels good about self
  • [_] Mother is really happy, excited to see baby, says nice things ......Feels everything is all right with the world
  • [_] Father is agreeable, smiling, and showing baby off ......Feels pleasure, feels perfect, and secure
